SAN PEDRO BAY MITIGATION BANK

San Pedro Bay Mitigation Bank (SPBMB) is located in Taylor County, Florida in the heart of Florida's Big Bend. This 6,745 +/- acre site is state and federally approved for 1,000 freshwater wetland mitigation credits.

The historic vegetative communities and hydrology of the SPBMB site had been impacted by extensive silviculture activities and suppression of natural fire patterns had affected vegetative communities. The primary objective of the bank was to restore the hydrologic and vegetation characteristics of the 6,700 acre site to its historical levels.

In order to achieve the criteria in the bank permit, silviculture was discontinued on the site. Additionally, ditch plugs and low water crossings were used to restore natural hydrological conditions. This restored broad sheet flows across much or the SPBMB area, thus increasing the natural hydro-period. These activities yielded a shrub bog/marsh mosaic across approximately 90% of the site and an improved natural forest community across 10% of the site.

The above restoration activities has improved wildlife habitat conditions by increasing the amount of aquatic wetland habitat and the quality of foraging, denning, and nesting habitats.

Florida black bear
(Ursus americanus floridanus)

The Florida black bear once ranged throughout Florida and numbered over 12,000. With destruction of the black bear’s forested habitat expected to accelerate in coming years, management under the Endangered Species Act will help the people of Florida recover a valuable part of their wildlife heritage.
