San Pedro Bay Mitigation Bank (SPBMB) is located in Taylor County, Florida in the heart of Florida's Big Bend. This 6,745 +/- acre site is state and federally approved for
freshwater forested and shrub-bog mosaic wetland credits under the UMAM
assessment.
The historic vegetative communities and hydrology of the SPBMB site had been impacted by extensive silviculture activities and suppression of natural fire patterns had affected vegetative communities. The
restoration activities of the SPBMB bank have restored the hydrologic and vegetation characteristics of the site to its historical levels.
In order to achieve success, silviculture was discontinued on the site and then
the installation of ditch plugs and low water crossings were used to restore natural hydrological conditions. This restored broad sheet flows across much of the SPBMB
site, increasing the natural hydro-period. These activities yielded a shrub bog/marsh mosaic across approximately 90% of the site and an improved natural forest community across 10% of the site.
As an added benefit, the restoration activities have improved wildlife habitat
conditions by increasing the aquatic wetland habitat and the quality of
foraging, denning and nesting habitats.
SPBMB is located in the Aucilla drainage basin and services both the Aucilla and
Steinhatchee basins.
