NORTH TAMPA MITIGATION BANK

The North Tampa Mitigation Bank (NTMB) is a 161.44 acre site located along the Hillsborough River in Hillsborough County, Florida.  Situated between two conservation areas, Lettuce Lake Park to the west and Flatwoods Park to the east, the NTMB provides a key connection for conservation lands along the Hillsborough River.   The site contains approximately 1.5 miles of river shoreline and a natural levee that  extends the length of the site along the river.

The site is comprised of early to mid-successional forested floodplain wetlands and upland areas formed through natural soil deposition within the floodplain.

Three main vegetation communities are found within the NTMB site: forested floodplain wetlands, mixed hardwood uplands located along the fringe of the floodplain, and uplands on the natural levee adjacent to the river channel.  The mitigation plan proposed for the NTMB includes the preservation, enhancement, and long-term protection and management of the onsite habitats.

NTMB has been approved by the Southwest Florida Water Management District to offset freshwater forested and non-forested impacts within the Hillsborough River Drainage Basin.   U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approval is pending.

Hillsborough River

The Hillsborough River originates in the Green Swamp to the north and flows southward to Tampa Bay. The river recharges the Florida aquifer and protects surrounding areas by storing floodwaters.
